Dahlias are great garden plants that come in many variety's and different colour patterns. Planted in full sun and in an area away from frost Dahlias will flower for long periods spanning from mid summer to late autumn if planted in mid spring as it will take 8 weeks for bulbs to produce flowers.

If you like having cut flowers in the house then dahlias are a great way to go as they will last around a week in a vase and as a result of cutting the flowers it will promote new flowers to take there place so you can continue to enjoy there colours for many months. Every couple of years or so you will need to dig them up to divide them as if let to grow in clumps it can result in pest infestation or in humid conditions to result in powdery mildew which will effect how long they flower for and could result in dead plants.

Dahlias once considered old fashioned are making a comeback to gardens as they are stunning flowers with head turning colour and are low maintenance talk about win win win. and if you are a fan of giving someone a plant as a present it couldn't be easier as propagation of dahlias are as simple as dividing the bulbs in half and planting in a suitable pot. As they do die off once the first frost has hit it will leave your garden bed bare until the ground warms up again but with what they have to offer in return makes it only a small issue which can easily be fixed by planting a suitable plant for the winter time. Thanks for reading and have fun in the garden.
